AbstractThis book is a compilation of articles by Linda Zook, Steven Bower, Thomas Black, Frank Aquila, Patrick Tydings, Robert Powers, and Bruce Graham on the legal and educational history of school segregation. An initial article reviews the Federal court process. Also presented is a general historical review of Supreme Court doctrine on the issue of racial integration and black civil rights from 1949 to 1979; court decisions are explained in the context of the prevailing social philosophy regarding black intelligence. The background and issues involved in five cases in which the "separate but equal" doctrine operated are discussed. Other chapters focus on the background and testimony regarding the Brown decision, as well as other school desegregation cases after "Brown." A description of four cases involving busing as a desegregation method is also presented. The final chapter in the book addresses desegregation litigation in Northern cities. Extensive bibliographies are provided both for individual cases discussed throughout the book and on legal, historical, and general issues relating to school desegregation and racial discrimination.
